Tortoise fun!

We looooove having desert tortoises for pets. They are the absolute best! They are low maintenance, eat your weeds and grass, don't drink a lot of water, and their poop is easy to clean up. They are also really entertaining to watch and really friendly. Crazy, ancient looking animals. We've had Buddy for a couple of years now and he's the most fun. He has a great personality and loves to come out whenever we do yard work and go exploring in the backyard. He loves the kids too. Sassy (aka Prissy) we got last year and she is a little more picky and likes to hiss when she's mad. haha. We made them their own burrows which they stayed in until recently when they took up residence in and under our shed. A couple months ago Clint went to mow the lawn and discovered a tiny green thing crawling in the grass... it was a baby tortoise!! We're thinking when we got the girl tortoise last year, she was already pregnant and we didn't know it. It's the cutest thing, but we've only seen it a few times this summer. We also have 3 box turtles (which we've only seen 2 this year) named grandma, speedy, and tiny. The desert tortoises are the best though!
Feeding them a little treat of frozen peas with Carson looking on
fighting for the best peas
Sassy thinks Emma's cherries on her dress are real and tried to take a bite. haha
MMMMM... they love strawberries. Speedy the box turtle decided to try and get in on this treat
Here's our baby!! Oh... it's so cute!!

Oh- funny story. The other morning I was changing laundry and heard a couple of sounds in the corner of the laundry room. When I went to see what it was I discovered Buddy and Sassy had broken through the hole in the wall (that's supposed to have a screen covering it that vents the laundry room to the outside) and were huddled together inside the laundry room (I guess they were afraid of the thunder and lightning.) haha. It was so cute. I just left them alone and within the next hour they crawled back outside. It was funny!

I had one growing up. His name was Pokey. A friend of mine has tortoises that are having babies and we are getting two in Sept (hopefully) You'll have to help us get the set up and let me know what they eat. How fun.

My mom always loved having desert tortoises, too. She had one forever named "Trouble." And a few others along the way including our share of babies too. Marcie "adopted" one of the babies once, named him Pumba and he lived in this tupperware tub like thing while he was tiny. Well, one summer afternoon, Marcie and I were out in the pool and she brought Pumba out in his tub and let him enjoy the sunshine. It must have been too hot for him because poor little Pumba literally fried in the sun. Marcie was devestated when we climbed out of the pool to discover Pumba had died right there in the sunshine. Mean as it is, I still tease her about it. :)
